Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is very common, 1 out of 10 women will suffer from PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) during her lifetime.  It is like a circle and will hit you at different times of your life with different manifestations. The struggle with weight loss is common to all stages. The manifestations will vary usually starting with puberty. Symptoms like irregular periods, stubborn acne, extra unwanted hair on the face, or hair loss. As you age you may come across some fertility problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout, diabetes, and even stroke. We don’t have a specific medication to address this but when you address the symptoms as a whole, it can be well controlled.

The cause of PCOS is not very clear. Research shows that it could be genetic or environmental leading to an imbalance between male and female hormones.

Testing for this syndrome includes:

  • Pituitary testing

  • Adrenal testing

  • Ovaries testing

  • Metabolism testing

  • More importantly a good history and physical exam

  • Family history is very important and pregnancy history is crucial. Rarely is there anyone who struggles with miscarriages, fertility, or birth to large babies that does not have PCOS!

Since symptoms begin between age 14 and 100 you can have this for most of your life if you are prone to it. It is very important to have it diagnosed and treated as early as possible for the best outcome.

Treatment Includes:

  • Nutrition and diet changes with lifestyle modifications.

  • Medications such as metformin, hormonal, and anti-hormonal action medications.

  • Weight loss medication.

Half of the battle with PCOS is finding your partner in this journey, a doctor who listens and believes in your ability to do well.
